Safe Cleanup and Privacy
Learn how MangoDisk handles local scanning, permissions, deletion confirmation, system optimization, and maintenance safely
Updated 2026/08/30
MangoDisk scans and displays results before any cleanup. It does not delete files automatically during a scan, and you make the final selection.
File scans stay on your device
File contents, names, paths, and scan results are processed on the current device. They are not uploaded to analyze disk usage. Cleanup history is also stored locally.
App update checks and website visits are separate from file scanning. See the Privacy Policy for those details.
Grant only the access you need
macOS and Windows protect some folders. The operating system requests access only when the feature you use needs to read or clean one of those locations.
If you do not grant access, protected locations may be missing from the result, while other accessible locations can still be scanned. You can review or revoke permissions in the system privacy or security settings.
Understand risk labels
Deep Cleanup uses “Low risk” and “Needs review” labels to help with inspection. App Uninstaller also distinguishes items required for uninstall, items that can be recreated, and items that may contain user data.
These labels narrow the review; they do not replace it. If an item is unfamiliar, open its location and identify the app or project that created it.
Change startup items safely
Scanning Startup Items does not change system settings. Turning an item off affects future startup or sign-in only; it does not quit a program that is already running or remove its files.
Keep security, input, backup, and other essential services enabled. System-managed items are view-only, and leftover cleanup removes only obsolete startup settings.
Run system changes and maintenance safely
System Optimization and System Maintenance only read the current state during a check. Optimization uses a reviewed set of built-in settings, while maintenance uses tools provided by macOS or Windows. Neither feature accepts arbitrary commands or scripts.
MangoDisk warns you before a task needs administrator approval, briefly restarts a system service, or requires a computer restart. It runs only the task you confirm and reads the state again afterward. Save your work first, especially when you are actively using audio, printing, file management, or network services.
Deletion is usually permanent
Large files, duplicate copies, and items removed from Disk Space Analysis are deleted permanently. Deep Cleanup and App Uninstaller can also remove caches, settings, or local data that cannot be recovered.
Before you continue:
- save your work and close any apps listed by MangoDisk;
- check names, locations, sizes, risk labels, and the selected total;
- back up documents, photos, projects, templates, and important settings.
If you are still unsure what an item does, leave it unselected.
