Disk Space Analysis

Running low on disk space? Disk Space Analysis shows which files and folders take up the most room. Start with a large folder, then open it to see what's inside.

Start an analysis

Choose a disk or folder at the top of the page, then click Start Analysis. You can choose from common folders and recent locations, or browse to another folder. If you only want to check Downloads, analyze that folder instead of the whole disk.

You can cancel at any time. Files and folders that MangoDisk cannot read, or that you have excluded, may be missing from the results.

Scan modes on Windows

On Windows, use the arrow beside the analysis button to choose a scan mode:

Standard scan measures the space files actually occupy on disk.
Fast scan adds up file sizes for a faster first look at large files and folders.

File size and space used on disk are not always the same. For example, system compression can reduce the space a file occupies. The two scan modes can therefore produce different totals. To check actual disk usage, choose Standard scan. macOS and Linux use Standard scan without a mode selection menu.

Use the file list and charts

The list on the left shows the current folder's contents, from largest to smallest. Each entry includes its size, file count, and percentage of the folder's total. A bar behind each entry helps you compare them at a glance.

On the right, switch between Treemap and Sunburst. Hover over an item in either the list or chart to highlight its area. Hovering over the chart also shows details such as size, full path, and the percentage of space used in the current or parent folder.

Treemap

In the treemap, larger tiles mean more space used. Increase the depth to see inside folders without leaving the chart and find out which files or subfolders take up the most room.

Sunburst

The sunburst shows folders as a series of rings. Inner rings represent parent folders; outer rings show their contents. The size of each section shows how much space it uses, making it easy to see which subfolders account for most of the total.

Adjust chart depth

The Depth selector above the chart controls how many levels are visible: 1–6 for Treemap and 2–6 for Sunburst. Fewer levels give you an overview; more levels reveal finer detail. Items too small to display individually may still be grouped.

MangoDisk remembers the depth for each chart and the chart you last used. Changing depth does not rescan the disk. If your window is wide enough, use the button at the right end of the path bar to hide the file list and give the chart more room.

Explore folders

Click a folder in the list or either chart to see its contents. The path bar shows where you are:

Click a parent folder in the path to go straight back to it.
Use Back and Forward to move between locations you have visited.
Click the home icon to return to the starting location of this analysis.
If a folder in the path has a dropdown arrow, click it to choose another folder at the same level.

Small items may be grouped into Other in the chart. Click that group to inspect its contents. After files are added, moved, or deleted, click Analyze Again in the upper-right corner to refresh the results.

Exclusions and totals

Excluded folders and items that match your name-based exclusion rules are not counted. A note appears on the page when exclusions apply.

Excluding a folder does not delete its contents or free up disk space. As a result, the total in the chart may differ from the used space reported by your system.

Open or permanently delete items

Right-click a file or folder in the list or chart to open it, show it in your system file manager, or delete it permanently. If Delete isn't available for an item shown inside a folder, open that folder first and delete the item from the list.

MangoDisk asks for confirmation before deletion. Files and folders are permanently deleted, without going to the Trash or Recycle Bin. System-protected items cannot be deleted directly. If MangoDisk asks you to verify file sizes, run the analysis again before deleting.

Before deleting anything, check what it is used for and back up important files. If you are unsure, take a look in Finder or File Explorer first. To narrow down the results by file type or size, use Large File Cleanup.
