# How to Clear Recent Files and Browsing History on Windows 11

> Tired of clearing history one app at a time? MangoDisk brings supported browser, app, and Windows activity into one place so you can choose what to clear and keep.

You may have forgotten which personal document you opened or what you searched for yesterday. Your PC may still have it in a recent-items list—ready to appear when you share your screen or lend someone your laptop.

To clear recent-file history on Windows 11 without working through each browser and app separately, use **Privacy Cleanup** in [MangoDisk](/). One scan brings supported browser, app, and system records into a single view. Choose the items you no longer need, review the impact, and confirm the cleanup.

There are no hidden folders to hunt down or deletion scripts to run. You can clear history without selecting cookies, sign-in data, or sessions you still want. MangoDisk is free and open source, runs locally, and requires no signup or login.

## More than browser history, without more settings to search

Clearing Chrome's history doesn't clear Edge's. An office app may still list your recent documents after you've finished with both. Each app has its own controls, and it's easy to miss one.

MangoDisk groups records by source, so you can see which browser, profile, or app they belong to without switching between settings screens.

Available items depend on your installed apps and permissions. MangoDisk lists records it can recognize and handle locally; it doesn't treat all app data as junk.

## Clearing history shouldn't mean signing in everywhere again

It's frustrating to finish a cleanup only to find that your favorite sites have signed you out and your open tabs won't come back.

MangoDisk separates **Browser activity** from **Browser accounts** and shows risk or impact notes alongside items. If you only want to clear history, check those items. Leave cookies and account-state data unselected if you want to keep them, and keep session data if you still need to restore your tabs.

Clearing a recent-document record removes the history entry, not the document itself. Download history is also just a list: clearing it doesn't delete the files you've downloaded. [Microsoft explains the distinction](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/edge/view-and-delete-browser-history-in-microsoft-edge).

You make the choice. MangoDisk puts the source, scope, and likely impact in view so you don't have to guess what an option will do.

## A three-step cleanup

1. **Scan in Privacy Cleanup.** Review the browser, app, and system activity sections. Scanning alone deletes nothing.
2. **Choose a range and check your selection.** Items that support time filtering offer the last hour, today, the last seven days, or all time. Windows recent documents and Jump Lists currently support **All time** only. Skip those groups if you need to keep some of their existing history.
3. **Review and confirm.** If a browser is holding its data open, save your work, then close it when prompted or skip the affected items. Check the results in Operation History afterward.

Clearing cookies or site storage can sign you out or remove locally stored website data. Clearing sessions can affect tab restoration. Operation History records what happened; it cannot undo deleted history. See the [Privacy Cleanup guide](/docs/features/privacy-cleanup) and [safety guide](/docs/safety) for details.

If you only need to clear File Explorer's recent list, its built-in **… → Options → General → Privacy → Clear** control may be enough. MangoDisk is useful when you want to review several browsers and apps together. ## Free, open source, and no new account to create

Privacy cleanup isn't necessarily about reclaiming gigabytes. A small history file can still reveal personal filenames, visited sites, and habits. MangoDisk handles these records on your computer without uploading them for cloud analysis.

It clears supported local records, not data held by websites or cloud services, and it is not a secure-erasure tool.

For a broader cleanup, you can also use MangoDisk to [find large files on Windows](/blog/find-large-files-windows-11) or [review leftovers after uninstalling apps](/blog/completely-uninstall-apps-windows-11). History, storage, and app leftovers have separate controls within the same tool.

[Download MangoDisk](/) and see which records are still on your PC. No signup, no login—just review the results and choose what to clear.
